In Bremen, over 1,500 people fell victim to Nazi tyranny; the number of those deported and persecuted exceeds 3,000. The artist Gunter Demnig commemorates these victims by embedding Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) in the sidewalk in front of their last known residence. Since the project began in 2004, over 600 of these memorial stones have been laid in Bremen.
