The Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) project has existed in Bremen since 2004; since then, 583 Stolpersteine have been embedded in the sidewalk. Placed in front of the last known residence or workplace of the victims, they commemorate those who perished in Nazi tyranny. The concise inscriptions on the Stolpersteine are the result of extensive biographical research. The Stolpersteine Bremen project will publish biographies of all the memorial stones in volumes organized by district. The volume for the northern region contains, for the first time, a compilation of biographical portraits of various victim groups.
